Painting

There's been a little more painting here over the past week or so.

Some Old Glory Persian slingers. I've quite enjoyed working on these.

Note the difference the dip makes (centre figure).

That's a start made on my Achaemenid Persian foot, though there are about 400 more to go!

Then some more figures from the American purchase. These ones I've just touched up and based. I'm not a big fan of these riders. They sort of look like gormless rabbits.

The Donnington Italian foot is OK, but I'm badly missing my matt spray varnish, which has decided to go all cloudy on me and I've had to use semi-gloss to clean them up. Don't like the look very much. Too shiny...

Functional stuff, but I think I prefer my own painting style.

  1. I am a dipper, myself, and your comparison shows why. The depth produced with a dip gives a figure more personality and tones down the colors a bit.

    1. Yes, the dip does make a big difference. It's a game changer, that's for sure. Done with output in mind it probably results in slightly reduced overall quality, but at a massive increase in productivity. Or else you can come back and highlight to get the quality back up, but with, of course, a corresponding increase in time spent.

Either way, a great tool to have in the arsenal!

  2. Newton and Winsor (artist stuff) do a good brush on matt varnish. Worth a swipe over each side of the figure when they are on the painting stick. I find that you just have to make sure you do a single swipe, as you can re-activate any inks you have used and that starts to contaminate the brush.

    1. Thanks Norm. I like to do a spray, and until this batch my matt varnish has been very reliable unless you spray in humid conditions. I'm not sure if it's a bad couple of cans or whether they've changed the formula. I'll experiment a bit more, but may well have to turn to a brush on varnish. If so, I'll check out the Newton and Winsor. Thanks for the tip!

  4. Nice Persian slingers and Italians Aaron! I find Testor Dullcote a really reliable matt varnish even in humid conditions.

    1. Thanks Mike, not sure if I can find it over here, but I'll hunt around!

  5. Very nice. As with Norm, I brush-varnish everything, and W&N matte finish is good, along with Pebeo.

  6. Nice additions Aaron! The difference the dip (washes in my case) make are great, really speeds things up.
