'Armies of the Middle Ages' found!

Thanks to Cyrus (of Satrap Miniatures blog fame) and his recent kind comment here advising me to check out Abe Books, two essential wargaming tomes that I'd given up hope of getting my hands on (for a price I could kind of justify to my wife and kids, at least!) have been found, and are making their way to this part of the world.

The WRG books are so good that I don't know how I ever managed without them. In fact, looking at my early painting efforts, the truth is I didn't manage, and I have been slowly repainting those first figures ever since.

I don't quite have the full set yet, but as the two I still need have been reprinted, it is not the impossibility that it until recently seemed.

Now to finish off a few other things so that I can clear the painting table for business.

  1. Glad you were able to order the WRG books Aaron. Abebooks is great for second hand and out of print books.

  3. Yes - so long as they don't get intercepted by pirates on their voyage over here!

  4. Good stuff! The WRG "Armies of..." are great value - I think I look at one of them at least once a week for one reason or another. I got most of mine second hand about 5 years via ABEBooks or bookfinder or Amazon. The only two I don't have are the the ones you have just acquired!

    1. Well, if a pirate should nab them, I hope they end up for sale dirt cheap in a secondhand shop somewhere near you!

Yep, they are great books. Armies of the Macedonian and Punic Wars and Armies & Enemies of Imperial Rome have the most valuable for me, but the others are ready for when they are needed.

  5. Excellent books to pick for your wargaming book collection. I have the whole set in my library with duplicates in a few. Which ones are you missing?

    1. Nice work! I came to wargaming relatively late - and in Japan - so it's taken me a while to build the collection up (or even to know what should be in it). I still need the Armies of the Greek and Persian Wars and Armies of Feudal Europe, but they are at the Book Depository now, so the dream is within reach!

      Cheers,
      Aaron

    2. Aaron, neither of those titles are duplicated in my library. When I was searching for the series, Armies of the Ancient Near East was the one I found most difficult (and expensive) to get.

    3. I forgot about that one - I don't have that, either. It's not urgent though; chariot warfare is not such a big interest of mine. Great to see pictures of, but not things I like to build and paint very much!

    4. Ah, there is always time to develop a new interest! Besides, chariots are so cool!

  7. Holy smokes! Dude talk about bringing back memories, I've had those books on my book shelf forever. Survived several moves and being sorted to the out bin (garbage) on top of that! They were like the ONLY books avialable for us painting 15's back in the day playing DBM and later DBR.

Good times my friend, gems indeed!

    Cheers
    Kevin

    1. Haha, glad they were rescued from the bin! There must be a special punishment reserved for those who dump WRG A&Es book, surely?

Cheers, and always nice to hear from you!
