After a (welcome!) interruption or two, the paints are back out, this time to finish off some Xyston Macedonian / Successor cavalry.
Not too much left to do now: highlight the bronze, do horse the markings, tidy up the odd thing here and there and then it's onto the dip/wash and varnish.
These are lovely figures, but the xystophoroi are noticeably larger than the companions and Thessalians, so I'm going to have to be creative when it comes to basing time.
These were done (as anyone can see!) with a brown undercoat instead of my usual gray. I think they've come out reasonably well and I'll certainly consider using it again for future batches of horse.
Nice, strange about the size difference though. Do you go back and put highlights in after dipping?
ReplyDeleteSometimes - I often just do a clear coat to bring everything together, and then finish with a matte or satin varnish. Might to a selective dip here, maybe horses and flesh, and try and keep the linothorax as painted!
DeleteLooking good, Aaron!
ReplyDeleteYou would think that figures from the same range would be compatible in size. Surprising how often that is NOT the situation.
Yes, the Xyston Successors are notoriously bulky, even by comparison to others in the range. You don't notice that much in play though, so I probably won't stress too much :)
DeleteVery nice, I do like Xyston figures.
ReplyDeleteMe too - a pain in the backside to prep, but they look so good on the table you forget the pain, buy another batch, and go through the cycle again!
DeleteLooking good Aaron, love the Xyston figures!
ReplyDeleteYes, but see above :P
DeleteNice looking figures.
ReplyDeleteThanks David!
DeleteGreat work so far Aaron!
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean about Xyston miniatures, which are the best ancients miniatures range available, really a hit and a miss in terms of figure sizes...
my understanding is that Xyston hire sculptor's every few years and difficult to copy/sculpt previous figures carvings, hence different figure scales/sizes?...
I don't appreciate Xyston horses, which are to small for the mounted warriors/riders...
cheers,
Looking good sir!
