I've recently become aware that Chris Hahn, a prolific writer on solo wargaming, has started a blog. Chris is particularly interested in the ancient era, and likes to refight historical battles, often using different sets of rules, which he then compares for their effectiveness.
Interestingly, Chris does not use figures in his games. He uses cardboard bases and maps, so while he will not be showing pictures of figures in action, you will get to see diagrams and thoughtful musings on the battles and the rules.

He already has a fine piece up on his refights of Maldon, so I would urge anyone interested in the ancient era to go on over and give Chris a read and a 'welcome' comment.
In the "olden dayes" figure counts were much more central and part of game function than they are today--where in most systems stands represent "elements" and figure counts are mainly cosmetic. Add to this systems like Sabin's Lost Battles, and it is evident that you really don't need figures to play "miniatures"--counters will work just fine.

ReplyDeleteI can only hope that the interest will outweigh or at least overcome the infamy. To be certain, my intentions are not evil, criminal, or anything of the sort. Although, I can understand or at least imagine that many historical miniature wargamers will probably turn their noses up at my efforts.
Perhaps I should draft something like a position paper, explaining in greater detail my approach and reasons why? Something to think about anyway.

ReplyDeleteNo judgment here about gaming without figures! You might find my system for the Early Modern period interesting. It is totally figures-compatible, but was designed with counters and customization in mind.
