As all wargamers know, there is only one thing to do on July 1st. In my case the game is Battle Hymn Vol 1: Gettysburg and Pea Ridge.

My favourite Gettysburg gaming experience was my first one: a solo play of Rick Barber's Summer Sword. The maps are spectacular, but do require a rather large space. The rules as I recall were simplified from the orginal by a chap on boardgamegeek. A close second was Thunder at the Crossroads with Pat Hirtle.
This game is slightly more modest than either, being a one-mapper. The artwork is still impressive.
For some reason Gettysburg is one of those battles that just send chills down my spine. Frankly, I blame Ronald F Maxwell, Michael Shaara, Ken Burns, Shelby Foote and Bruce Catton!
Is anyone else putting a Gettysburg game on the table over the next few days?
No Gettysburg games on deck this weekend for me but I should have! For me and my gaming table, it is more Samurai gaming over the next week or two. I like the look of that Gettysburg map a lot. TatC is a great Gettysburg game.
ReplyDeleteYes, looks like you had a good stuff happening Jon!
DeleteNone here either (I don't do ACW), but I have been to Gettysburg at least 4 times; an impressive place!
ReplyDeleteA place I hope to get to myself some day
DeleteFunny you mention Gettysburg. I worked on that movie as a summer job. Living there for a summer and getting to walk the battlefield every day was quite an experience.
ReplyDeleteThis Limey is green with envy!
DeleteWhat a great memory that must be!
DeleteI normally would, but this year my head is filled with the distractions of medieval and WWII. Nice to hear the mention of Pat Hirtle, a gentleman.
ReplyDeleteHope you enjoy your game, I love playing the opening few hours.
Yes, it's the opening hours that do it for me as well Norm!
DeleteThat map is a work of art!
ReplyDeleteIt sure is
DeleteThat is a lovely map for the game Aaron. How'd you go?
ReplyDeleteBest wishes, James
I've still got it set up and am into turn 6, so it's going well!
DeleteLord Bell -
ReplyDeleteGettysburg is indeed a timely consideration. Though not a died in the Yankee Blue or Rebel Gray wargamer, the various scenarios contained within the original Fire & Fury rules were always quite appealing and interesting. With regard to additional reading or perhaps just scanning, might I suggest the book by Noah Andre Trudeau as well as the excellent work written by Allen C. Guelzo? Here's hoping you're able to stave off that ennui for at least 5 turns of play - before you find yourself bored of the game.
I do have the Guelzo book and it's a goodie! Thankfully, have not got bored of the game yet. Perhaps there is some hope for me after all?
