They started painting them a couple of Sundays ago and did some more last weekend (though in the spirit of the Elves and the Shoemaker I would do a little more at night...).
Here is how they turned out.
Very shiny, very green.
Hopefully the kids will enjoy them in their finished state, and fingers crossed that two coats of PVA and three coats of Tamiya topcoat will keep some of the paint on them for a while!
Hi,
ReplyDeleteI don't know of course whether it's available where you are, but Krylon has come out with spray paint that bonds with plastic, and thus prevents flaking. I guess it's too late now for these guys, but maybe for the future...
Best regards,
Chris Johnson
Many thanks, Chris, I'll look into it!
DeleteCheers,
Aaron
Very nice and I'll keep my fingers crossed for you on the varnish!!
ReplyDeleteCheers, Ray. So far so good it seems!
DeleteI bet they love them.
ReplyDeleteThey seem to be getting some use :) Nothing like having slapped paint on to create a bit of emotional investment!
DeleteLooking good! Hope the kids had fun!
ReplyDeleteAnother option, BTW, is Valspar clear plastic primer. Designed as the base for whatever topcoat you use. It works pretty well.
Thanks John. Another one to look into!
DeleteGood job in convincing the kids to give dad's hobby a try! Even if they don't take to gaming, you all participated in a wholesome family activity.
ReplyDeleteI have often considered buying a bag of similar Army Men at the local $1 store and using them for a group activity. That is, get the guys together for a painting night and drop a bag of these in front of them. We would then paint a handful of figures that evening and then use them in a skirmish game later. I wonder how they would respond to painting and gaming with these cheap, plastic Army Men?
To be honest, I mostly just wanted to get them away from the blasted Wii! I don't mind if they don't get into painting, but it's good for them to at least try and see what they think. They love playing Blokus, DungeonQuest and Ticket to Ride, so we'll have a few good game days as they get older I hope!
DeleteThat's a great idea to plonk some figures down and then put them straight into a game. A-Team skirmish or something perhaps ;-) ?
Cheers Jonathan!
Nicely done Mr. Elf!
ReplyDeletelol, must dye my shoes again!
DeleteNice project and nice minis!
ReplyDeleteCheers Phil, always good fun doing something a litle different :)
DeleteVery cool, Aaron! What a wonderful way to get the next generation involved in the hobby. I'm sure they'll love playing with these fine troops.
ReplyDeleteThanks Dean - I think they'be more impressed by your new Italian armour though!
DeleteWhat could be more fun than a big bag of cheap toy figures, lots of giggling children and plenty of messy paint? Well perhaps more of everything already mentioned would!
ReplyDeleteGreetings Beano Boy
