Saxons (and maybe a few Angles...)

Well, the (Anglo) Saxons are done. This is two Essex DBA armies' worth; Anglo Danish and Middle Anglo Saxon. Glad to have these done, and with the dip to help out they didn't take too long at all. This is the first time I've painted an army made up completely of Essex figs, and they were very nice to work with.

Next step is to flock them and then onto the Normans, Bretons, and Vikings, I guess. There may be a Samnite or Gallic interlude though. We'll see how things go.

  2. Looking good. These are mounted on 6cm-wide bases? If so, that makes DBA elements look much better, which has been my biggest hurdle to overcome with that ruleset.

    1. Thanks El Grego. Yes, 6cm bases, but they are a bit deeper than they would be for DBA (I went for 30mm depth, but strictly speaking the spear and blade should be 20mm!).

  3. Nice work, Aaron. Great timing too, as I am thinking of finally gaming the period again.

  4. They look great Aaron. Look forward to seeing the Normans. I bought sets of Pendraken Saxons and Normans nearly 10 years ago - they're still in the original bag. I still occasionally fantasize about 1066 and all that.

    Cheers, Andy

    1. Cheers Andy. Those Pendraken figures are lovely, from what I've seen. You're still pretty busy with your 1985 project though by the looks of things, so probably hard to fit them into the painting queue!

    1. Thanks Phil. Always nice to make a bit of progress. These guys had been primed and waiting to be painted for about 5 years!

    1. lol, no pressure then ;-) Hope to churn out some Normans soon too, so we might just end up with a battle report after all!

      Cheers!

  7. The knock on Essex is that there is not enough detail. That for me is the selling point. They are dead easy to paint and look great. Your figures came out quite nice!

    1. Cheers, John. I like Essex for Dark Ages: smoothly cast, nicely proportioned. I reckon the detail is great. Price though has doubled since I bought these, so while I would like to get more you're looking at Xyston-grade prices and high shipping costs too :(
